Cycling and walking to work or school is a great choice for many reasons! This page features a few reasons you should consider trading in your car for a bike or good pair of shoes.

 

 

By Cycle from Central Edinburgh: 30 mins
National Cycle Route 1 runs from Waverley Station to the campus. There are also many quiet roads in the Musselburgh area which would allow for safe cycling. These can be seen online. There is plenty of space for bikes on all the trains calling at both Newcraighall and Musselburgh.

By Foot from Central Musselburgh: 20 mins
You should walk up Esk Side West (the road that runs parallel to the right of the river) towards Stoneybank. This continues onto Eskview Terrace. You will notice a few newsagents and take away on your right. Immediately after these shops, take the first right onto Whitehill Farm Road. Continue on up this road and you will arrive at QMU (it's just after the train station).

By Foot from Fort Kinnaird: 20 mins
Follow the A6095 Newcraighall Road from Fort Kinnaird, through the A1 junction and forward to the Newcraighall Park and Ride. Just past the Park and Ride site take a right onto the National Cycle Network path, alongside football park. Follow the path that runs to the new QMU site.  

Campus Facilities for Cyclists

To make cycling to QMU that bit easier, we have the following facilities:

Cycle Connection Bike Hire: Bikes are available for hire from the University at £40 per semester.  You can connect us about hiring a bike through social media or through assist@qmu.ac.uk.  For events and updates please visit the following Social Media Pages:

Lockers - personal item storage is available to those cycling to campus. They are located on level 1 of the main academic building and require an application form and a deposit paid before a key can be allocated. The key must be returned at the end of the academic year. Email bicyclelockers@qmu.ac.uk to request a locker.

No personal items should be left in changing facilities.  They should be stored in a locker or carried on your person.

Parking - there are a number of bike stands installed in university square, near the entrance to the main academic building. There are 4 secured cycle locker sheds at the accommodation block for students staying in the halls of residence and 1 available for regular cyclists which also contains space to leave wet gear.

Abandoned Bicycles - Bicycles on campus that are deemed to be abandoned will be tagged by campus security. If the bicycle remains for a further month it will be removed and held in storage for a set period of time. If again unclaimed, it will be donated to a local bicycle charity. To avoid bicycles being removed, students and staff are advised not to leave bicycles locked and unmoved on QMU campus for a continuous period of four weeks or more.

Secure bike lockers - for regular cyclists, there are a limited number of secure bike lockers installed behind the bus stop and enclosed cycle store at accommodation block A. Email bicyclelockers@qmu.ac.uk to request a locker. 

Showers -

There are Showering facilities available on Level 01 however some adaptations have been implemented to comply with social distancing. These changes include:

  • The capacity of the changing rooms has been limited to one person at a time.
  • Users should lock the door from the inside upon entering.
  • A vacant/engaged door slider will be fitted to the front of the door, any person using the room should adjust the slider to display the appropriate message upon entering or leaving the room.
  • Cleaning materials will be provided to enable users to clean the shower areas before and after use.
  • Hand sanitiser will be available outside the changing room.

An additional shower is available in the disabled toilet of the Sports Centre. This will be exclusively for Active Travel users to avoid interaction with Sports Centre users in the main changing area.  Cleaning materials will be provided and signage displayed to encourage users to clean the area before and after use.

A second disabled toilet in the Sports Reception will provide a dry changing area for Active Travel users wishing to change their clothing before or after travel.


Emergency maintenance kits - our Security Desk has available tools, lubricant, pump and puncture repair kit for any emergencies that may arise. A hose, located at the grounds workshop can be used freely by cyclists.

Dr. Bike Sessions - The University regularly arranges a mobile mechanic to service bikes cycled in on the day. The mechanic will spend up to 15 minutes per bicycle to repair minor problems on the spot. More major problems can be diagnosed and a bike "MOT" provided.  These are regularly held on the last Thursday of each month beside the bike racks in the courtyard. They haven't started up yet for 2020, but keep an eye out for news on when they'll start on our facebook- @cycleconnections

Online cycle journey planners

The CycleStreets journey planner can provide excellent information for route planning.

National Cycle Network routes across the UK can now be navigated online using the bicycle symbol, alongside the options of driving, public transport, and walking.

Planning a walk

To plan your journey on foot, all you need to do is type in your origin and destination into the walkit.com journey planner.

Walkit.com will generate a route map for you between two points, as well as providing you with an estimated journey time, the approximate number of calories you will burn, a step count and also your carbon saving. You can also choose different route options - perhaps you'd like to take the more scenic route.

Just Eat cycles

New for 2020 we have a fleet of Just Eat Cycles.

Using the app you can find a bike, unlock it and find where to deposit it again at the end.
